In the past, they have received beautiful beaded bracelets w/a charm of our mascot. But some of these people already have this bracelet b/c they have been on the board for awhile. Can't decide if it should be personal or more of a "plaque" that thanks them for their help. In the old days, back when my mother was PTA president, it was tradition that the outgoing prez present their staff officers with a small token of affection. This token was purchased by the prez with their personal money.

When I finished my term of office, my principal and board bought me this lovely, symbolic commemorative plaque-like knickknack. I very much appreciate their generosity and kind thoughts. But frankly - it's just something else to collect dust in my house, yet I feel too guilty to get rid of it.

Our exiting board members receive a nice bouquet of flowers at the last meeting they preside at. We have beautiful flowers at our Costco and they are not at all expensive but a nice gesture and an expression of appreciation for all the hardwork. And yes, most of us do not come on board in anticipation of that last meeting to "get something" but all the same, your teachers get paid for their jobs and we spend money on them and all the other staff who get "paid" with teachers appreciation gifts, etc... I see absolutely nothing wrong in acknowledging your hardworking and dedicated board members at the end of the year with a little gift, flowers, certificate or whatever you want.

I was the first incoming prez to present the old prez with a gift. Being on a limited budget, I chose to make the gift. I purchased an inexpensive pot, filled it with planting soil and many different types of seeds, making sure something would always be growing. I waited until there were sprouts. I then wrote a flowery speech, about how, like the flowers, she would continue to grow as she went on to do other things.

Learn how to run an effective meeting in an hour or less and fill the room with parents and PTO members clamoring to learn more about how to help with the Meeting Success Kit. Take the amount you would have spent on gifts/plaques and donate it to the school library . Have some nicely prepared text (like you would have had on the plaque, but have it printed on nice labels to put on the inside cover of the books. It could be one person per book or it could be the group listed. A warm thank you, maybe a card would have been more than enough. In other organizations where I do volunteer work - if they just really feel the need to give something, I'd much prefer a token consumable. A nice candle, a $5 gift card to Starbucks, etc.

It brought the house down, didn't cost me an arm and a leg and turned everyone on to an old, but gracious, tradition from my mother's time. Remember, she is leaving and it should be very easy to take the high road. I also think that it shows that you have class.
