The current owners of Moore House in Los Angeles are a married couple who had a desire to update the house while making sure that they were able to preserve many of its original details. The rectangular, single-storey property sits atop a tall, concrete block foundation and has glass walls set within a redwood frame for a pleasingly vintage aesthetic we’re loving here at The Coolector.

His first teaching assignment occurred at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City between 1950 and 1952. He then did military service in the US Army Reserves, where he served in the Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. Divorcing in California when you own significant assets, like a home, requires a thorough understanding of the applicability of intricate property laws. The Moore/Marsden calculation is just one such example. Many factors can complicate the calculation.

He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. In 1946, he started a construction company with his brother Cleve and the Marzicola Brothers under a new name, Craig Ellwood. Sold in 2018 to Daniel Goldfarb aka MR Cedn LLC. Bottom five photos by Michael Locke. For us, a house dictates the design. The home’s history and architecture end up being a guiding force in our process, informing the shapes, hardware, and colors. We believe in synergistic design, so we want the interiors to feel related to the physical structure while also introducing modernity and reflecting our client’s lifestyle. With a philosophy informed by our respect for historical architecture, our intention is to design with out-of-the-box creativity while staying true to the original character of a structure.

For the restoration, the exterior of Moore House received a full update by Woods + Dangaran and new glazing was installed, with the existing wood structure and fascias also being restored in the process. Internally, the home has a fluid and simple layout. A main suite occupies one end, and a guest bedroom and an office are positioned at the other. The central portion of the Mid-Century home is turned over to an open area for living, dining and cooking. Straightforward living at its finest. Sited in a large park-like setting, the property contains numerous mature trees, private paths, sequestered seating areas and a turtle and Koi pond.

Thereafter, the house changed hands many times.During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War, military action around Yorktown caused considerable damage to the Moore House. Sitting in between Confederate lines in Yorktown and the Union forces on Wormley Creek, the house was within easy range of shell fire. Archeology and historic images were used to assist in its restoration. The restoration was one of the first of its kind for the National Park Service. The house was completed and formally dedicated on October 18-19, 1934, the 153rd anniversary of the surrender of Cornwallis and his British army. In the case of this Ellwood-designed residence, they also had the pleasure of working with clients who had a similar passion for retaining the integrity of the building.
